Abstract

This dataset includes chemical characterization data for four soil cores (organic horizon) collected in August 2014 from beneath two vegetation types (Eriophorum angustifolium and Carex aquatilis) from the centers of a low-centered and high-centered polygon at NGEE Areas A and B, respectively, on the Barrow Environmental Observatory near Barrow, Alaska. Measurements include gravimetric soil water content, total carbon and nitrogen, total organic carbon, and metabolomics data (low molecular weight organics). This dataset contains one xlsx file, two csv files, two pdf files, and four zipped files.

The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research.

The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska.

Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).

Methodology
Soil cores were collected from the centers of a LCP and HCP beneath two different vegetation covers (dominant aboveground vegetation). Cores were shipped on ice and stored frozen at -80degC until processing. Each core was sectioned into 5-cm depth increments using a band saw, and then thawed and homogenized by hand. Soil water extractions were used to isolate low molecular weight organics from soil matrix and core sections were also sub-sampled for TC/TN measurements. Extracts were analyzed by reversed-phase and hydrophilic interaction nano-liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization and high-resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry.
